How Vol Transfers Performed in 2017

Defensive Backs

D’Andre Payne (No. 2) during practice

Lemond Johnson (2013 class) – Richmond
2013 Season:
34 tackles, forced fumble

Remember Lemond Johnson at Tennessee? It’s okay if you don’t, he wasn’t heralded coming out of high school and rarely saw the field in two seasons at Tennessee. He ended up transferring to Richmond and put together a decent season last year, playing in 11 games and started five of them.

D’Andre Payne (2014 class) – Iowa State
2017 Season:
48 tackles, 6 TFLs, 3 PD, 1 INT, 1 fumble recovery

Payne came into Tennessee as an undersized corner who was going to struggle to see the field. So he transferred to Iowa State after going to Arizona Western for a year, and he’s been a consistent contributor for them. His 2017 numbers are almost identical to his 2016 numbers, and he was an honorable mention All-Big 12 player this past year.

Darrell Miller (2015 class) – Louisiana at Lafayette
2017 Season:
4 tackles, fumble recovery

Miller was a middling three-star prospect Butch Jones took out of Texas in the 2015 class. He never really got a chance to see the field beyond special teams while at Tennessee, so he went the JUCO route then ended up at Louisiana at Lafayette. He didn’t contribute much last season, however.
