Most of Tennessee’s 2018 signing class is on campus and going through summer workouts right now. But one of the Vols’ signees still isn’t on campus, and he’s not sure when he actually will arrive.
According to Rivals.com, defensive tackle Brant Lawless won’t be in Knoxville for either UT’s June or July summer sessions, and his status with the team is currently up in the air.
And Lawless doesn’t know what’s going on either.
“I’m not really sure what is going on,” Lawless told Rivals. “It’s frustrating.”
Lawless was a four-star defensive tackle in the 2018 class. He was rated as the No. 256 overall player and No. 7 player in the state of Tennessee in the cycle according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He and Greg Emmerson headlined the Vols’ in-state crop of defensive tackles in UT’s 2018 signing class.
Emmerson enrolled early and actually ended up switching to offensive line in the spring. And now it looks like his counterpart may not be joining him anytime soon.
“I honestly could not tell you,” Lawless replied when asked if he knew what the hold up was about. “I have no idea. I just don’t know.”
As a senior for Nashville Christian School, the 6-foot-3, 285 pound tackle made 49 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and recovered a fumble according to MaxPreps.
But Lawless isn’t the only member of the Vols’ 2018 signing class who isn’t on campus yet. The Vols’ top rated player in the class isn’t on campus right now either.
Linebacker J.J. Peterson still isn’t on Tennessee’s campus for classes. He reportedly has had a snafu with some academics, but he’s expected to be on campus for UT’s July summer session. Peterson was rated by the 247Sports Composite rankings as the No. 48 overall player and the No. 3 outside linebacker in the 2018 class. He’s easily the Vols’ highest-rated player in Jeremy Pruitt’s first recruiting class at Tennessee.
While it looks like Peterson’s status will get figured out within the next month, Lawless’ situation is much less certain. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
