The Vols had some drama in their linebacking unit this offseason with the departure and return of Darrin Kirkland Jr. in late May. Kirkland seemed intent on transferring, but he and his family met with Jeremy Pruitt over Memorial Day weekend, and the oft-injured linebacker decided to stay at UT.

Even so, Kirkland hasn’t had a healthy season since 2015. He’s missed more games over the last two years than he’s played in. And if the inside linebacker can’t go for whatever reason, there’s a good chance that sophomore linebacker Will Ignont will get the nod to replace him.

Ignont played primarily on special teams as a freshman last year, but he stood out during the spring and played extensively in the Orange & White Game as both Kirkland and Daniel Bituli sat out.

Even if Kirkland manages to stay healthy all season, the Vols will rotate several linebackers on their defense this season. And the former four-star prospect has the skill to find his way on the field even if he’s not starting.
