Fans have been clamoring for Tyler Byrd to switch from wide receiver to defensive back for a while now. Byrd was a highly-rated cornerback out of high school, but Butch Jones and his staff moved him to wide receiver when he came onto campus prior to the 2016 season.

Now, however, fans are getting their wish.

Jeremy Pruitt confirmed a couple weeks ago that Byrd would be getting a shot in the secondary for at least the first week of spring practice. Most anticipate he will stay there, but that will be dictated on how he performs at the position this spring.

If Byrd can come out in March and April and show he belongs in the secondary, Tennessee’s defensive backfield will get a big upgrade. Byrd has a great deal of potential as a corner, and he needs to get off to a good start in order to stay at that position.
