Quarterback is the most important position for any football team. And last year, the Vols struggled mightily at that position. Jarrett Guarantano had his ups last year, but he definitely had more downs in his redshirt freshman season.

Guarantano made his first career start as Tennessee’s quarterback against South Carolina. And while he showed glimpses of potential in that game and in future games, he was far from eye-popping or outstanding.

With Stanford grad transfer quarterback Keller Chryst set to join the team after spring concludes, it’s important now more than ever for Guarantano to assert himself as Tennessee’s quarterback.

Chryst brings with him a great deal of experience and more proven ability at the position than Guarantano. But if the rising redshirt sophomore can put in a superb spring, he will get a leg up on the competition come fall. And that would be huge in what will likely be a fierce competition for the starting spot this year.
