Report: Alabama to Hire Butch Jones

Reports came out last week that former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones was in talks with Nick Saban about joining his staff at Alabama. Now it appears the Tide may be close to hiring the former Vol head coach.

According to a report from SEC Country, Alabama is expected to announce the hiring of Jones “sometime this week.” Jones is expected to be hired on as an offensive analyst, an off-field position for the Tide.

Per a report from AL.com last week, Jones was in Tuscaloosa to meet with Saban face-to-face for an interview for the position. Jones hasn’t been in an off-field position since he was a graduate assistant for Rutgers from 1990-92.

Alabama is looking to replace some of their off-field assistants who have been hired away at other programs this offseason. The Vols hired Chris Weinke to be their running backs coach, Dan Werner was hired as South Carolina’s quarterbacks coach, and both William Vlachos and Shea Tierney are now in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.

Jones was fired on November 12th as the Vols’ head coach after going 34-27 overall and just 14-24 in conference play. Tennessee suffered their worst season in program history under Jones this past year, going 4-8 overall and 0-8 in the SEC.

  1. TN just hired Carter Blount from the AL staff and they hired Butch Jones. Definitely a +1 for the Vols. What is Saban thinking?
