Bryan Applewhite
Quick Bio: If Tennessee misses out on some of the Power Five coaches they go after, Bryan Applewhite isn’t a bad alternative. Applewhite has a relationship with two current Vol assistants in Will Friend and Terry Fair as all three coached together at Colorado State. Applewhite has been the running backs coach for the Rams since 2015, and he coached at Louisiana Monroe for five seasons prior.
Pros: Applewhite already knows two of Tennessee’s assistant coaches, and he’s the Rams’ recruiting coordinator. He’s helped Colorado State have some of the best rushing totals in school history the last few seasons. The Rams have averaged 2,668 rushing yards the last three seasons under Applewhite, and they averaged the second-highest yard per carry average in school history in 2016 when the team averaged 5.3 yards per carry.
Cons: Vol fans may not like that Applewhite doesn’t have any sort of Power Five experience, and that would be an outlier for the rest of Pruitt’s staff. He also hasn’t had major success in recruiting, but it’s hard to do so at schools like Colorado State and Louisiana Monroe.
