Hot Board: Vols’ Running Back Coach Candidates

Chris Weinke

Quick Bio: Tennessee and Weinke have been linked the last two offseasons, but he’s never officially joined the Vols’ staff. Weinke was a Hesiman Trophy winning quarterback for Florida State in 2000, and he was the head coach at IMG Academy, a prestigious high school, from 2010-14. He was the quarterbacks coach for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams from 2015-16 and was an offensive assistant with Alabama in 2017.

Pros: Weinke almost joined Pruitt’s staff as an assistant sometime in December, but that never came to fruition. So there’s a relationship there. That doesn’t even mention Weinke’s ties to IMG Academy, a school that’s always a recruiting hot bed every cycle.

Cons: Weinke has never played nor coached the running back position exclusively. He clearly understands offense, but how good of a running backs coach can he be?
