The Vols got a bit of a surprise for their first signature on National Signing Day. Three-star defensive end John Mincey chose Tennessee on Wednesday morning over South Carolina.
Mincey is rated as the No. 38 strong side defensive end in the country according to 247sports. He also had offers from Auburn, Florida and Florida State.
On January 11th, Mincey opened his recruitment when he decommitted from Arkansas. New safeties coach Charles Kelly was his primary contact in recruiting for Tennessee. Although the Vols offered Mincey last March, his recruitment started to pick up when Jeremy Pruitt arrived on campus.
Mincey visited Knoxville on January 20th. And even though South Carolina got his last visit on the 26th, he chose the Big Orange.
Here are Mincey’s highlights from high school. Standing at 6-foot-4, he’s a problem for tackles off the edge because of his size and quickness.
