3. Eddie Smith
The Vols are in a great spot with Eddie Smith. Now they need to close the deal.
Smith’s recruitment has also taken off in recent weeks, and he’s seen a huge rise in his overall recruiting stock. He was recently promoted to a four-star in the regular 247Sports ratings, and he’s now the No. 434 overall player in the composite rankings. But his ratings don’t tell the whole story.
The 6-foot, 180 pound corner holds offers from Alabama, Georgia, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, and others. Alabama has made Smith a priority over the last month, as have the Vols. Smith was once committed to TCU, but he decommitted from them back on December 15th. The Vols immediately dove in and became one of the leaders in his recruitment, but then a late offer from Alabama in early January put another twist in the corner’s recruitment.
Smith visited Tennessee on January 12th, and he received an in-home visit from Pruitt, cornerbacks coach Terry Fair, and wide receiver coach David Johnson on January 23rd. He also visited Alabama this past weekend, and Nick Saban has made it clear that Smith is one of their biggest targets as the 2018 cycle comes to a close.
Tennessee needs to add several corners in this class. And if they can nab Smith away from Alabama’s sudden interest, that would be a huge win for Pruitt and his staff.
