Vols Make Top 6 for Talented 2018 Defensive Tackle

Tennessee’s coaching staff is working on filling out the 2018 recruiting class as National Signing Day nears ever closer. And on Tuesday, the Vols picked up some good news as one of their top targets released their final list of teams they will be considering in their recruitment.

Otito Ogbonnia, a defensive tackle out of Katy, Texas, released his top six schools on Tuesday afternoon, and the Vols were included in his list. Tennessee made the cut along with Texas Tech, UCLA, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, and Nebraska.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Ogbonnia is a three-star prospect and the No. 54 defensive tackle in the 2018 class. He measures in at 6-foot-4, 290 pounds and has the frame to develop into a nose tackle in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He’s a quick tackle who plays with high energy and has more athleticism than you might expect.

The Vols offered Ogbonnia back on January 2nd of this year, and he’s slated to visit Tennessee this upcoming weekend.

Tennessee currently has three defensive tackles signed in their 2018 class and another one committed. Four-star Greg Emmerson, four-star Brant Lawless, and three-star Kingston Harris all signed with the Vols during the early signing period, and three-star D’Andre Litaker is currently committed to Tennessee (though it remains to be seen if he will stick with the Vols).

Yet of the Vols’ defensive tackles in the 2018 class, none seem to fit the nose tackle mold quite as well as Ogbonnia does.

The Vols are also pursuing Auburn commit Coynis Miller at nose tackle/defensive tackle in the 2018 class. Miller is also scheduled to visit Tennessee this weekend along with Ogbonnia.
