The Vols Who Can Benefit Most from New Coaching Staff

It’s time for Tyler Byrd to change positions. It’s been time. And he could finally do that under Tennessee’s new coaching staff.

Byrd showed off his athleticism and play-making ability in small spurts at wide receiver in his first two years as a Vol. But Butch Jones, for some baffling reason, failed to utilize Byrd’s skill set effectively and turned him into a bench player rather than using his explosiveness on an offense that desperately needed a play-maker this past year.

Tennessee’s defense needs help at corner. Many scouts and analysts believe that Byrd’s highest ceiling is actually at corner, not at receiver. Maybe Tennessee’s new coaching staff will try and find out and make that position change happen.

Even if Byrd stays on offense, the Vols’ new coaches should be able to get more out of him than the previous staff did. Byrd only recorded stats in four games this past season. That’s inexcusable considering he was a former four-star talent and is one of the fastest players on the team.

Expect to see Byrd on the other side of the ball in 2018. But even if he isn’t, expect to see his talent utilized much, much better this upcoming season.
