The Quarterbacks
None of Tennessee’s quarterbacks had a particularly good season last year. But with a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach coming in, they stand to benefit greatly in 2018.
The Vols totaled just 2,084 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in the passing game this season. Jarrett Guarantano, Quinten Dormady, and Will McBride all showed some potential, but none were ever able to fully capitalize on that potential. And that was for various reasons.
Tyson Helton had success as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at USC. Time will tell how effective of an offensive coordinator he will be, but his offensive system should be more friendly to Tennessee’s quarterbacks. And Helton has shown that he can coach up quarterbacks effectively as well.
Tennessee’s quarterbacks need a good quarterbacks coach. It’s too early to tell right this second if Helton will be the answer for the Vols’ QBs, but he at least has a track record of coaching great quarterbacks unlike Tennessee’s last QB coach.
