3. Vols Suffer Worst Season in Program History
Butch Jones and interim head coach Brady Hoke led the Vols to the worst season in program history in 2017. For the first time ever in Tennessee football history, the Vols suffered eight losses in a season. And for the first time since joining the SEC in 1933, the Vols went winless in conference play.
Tennessee suffered their worst loss in Neyland Stadium history when Georgia pounded them 41-0. The Vols suffered four losses by 20 or more points during the season. Tennessee lost to Kentucky for the first time since 2011 and only the second time in the last three decades. The Vols lost to Vanderbilt for the second consecutive season and the fourth time in six seasons. And Tennessee’s offense turned in their worst overall season since the abysmal 2008 campaign.
The Vols fell to new lows in 2017 in football. History was made multiple times during the 2017 season, but it was never in a good way. And this historically bad season paved the way for Butch Jones getting fired and all the madness that ensued.
