The Latest Tennessee Head Coaching Hot Board

Tennessee thought they had their man. But Vol fans spoke up and let their voices be heard, and now the Vols are back on the market for a head coach.

Athletic director John Currie wanted to hire Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano as the Vols’ next head coach, but Vol fans, media, and politicians revolted against the hire. Ultimately, Currie backed out of the deal with Schiano. And now Tennessee is still searching for a head coach.

So who does Tennessee turn to now?

Some of the big names the Vols were originally targeting, like Chip Kelly and Dan Mullen, have accepted jobs elsewhere as well. Now David Cutcliffe has said he “isn’t interested” in the job, Mike Gundy is staying at Oklahoma State, and other coaches like Matt Campbell of Iowa State have signed extensions at their current jobs.

With all that in mind, here’s who Tennessee is likely to target as their next head coach.

  1. How about thinking outside the box since inside the box isn’t working. Hire Steele as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Co. and hire Tee Martin as Associate Head Coach and Offensive Co and let them pick their assistants. Double or triple their pay. Egos shouldn’t be as big a problem since neither are head coaches. Fans will give them the time to develop. Just sayin’….
