Updated Vols Coaching Search Candidate List

Kevin Steele

Quick Bio: Kevin Steele has been everywhere, and he has Tennessee ties as well. He’s been a defensive coordinator at Alabama, Clemson, LSU, and is currently the DC at Auburn. He got his start as a coach with the Vols, starting out as an assistant in 1980 and coached linebackers for Tennessee in 1983. He came back to coach defensive backs for the Vols in 1987 and left after the 1988 season.

Pros: Steele got his start at Tennessee and knows the SEC well. He’s been a defensive coordinator at three different SEC schools and was a head coach at Baylor from 1999-2002. His defenses have mostly been good, and his Auburn defense this season has been excellent. He even coached in the NFL briefly with the Carolina Panthers.

Cons/Questions: Steele’s time at Baylor was abysmal. He went 9-36 in his four years with Baylor and won only one Big 12 game in those four years. He’s also bounced around college football so much that his ability to sustain a program should definitely be in question. His four years at Baylor is the longest he’s stayed at a single school aside from staying at Nebraska for six years as their linebackers coach from 1989-94.

  1. Folks this could be fixed very simply.
Hire Tee Martin and have Phil Fulmer mentor him on the administrative side of being Head Coach.
Call John Chavis and him come back as DC and Asst. Head Coach
Call Dale Jones have him come as LB and Asst. DC coach with expectations when Chief steps down he is DC
Have Peyton Manning call Jim Bob Cooter and beg him to some as OC.

    This fixes everything.
