Vols Have Reportedly Contacted Tee Martin, Jeff Brohm

Sunday was one of the craziest days in Vol history. And that’s saying something when you consider all the madness that’s happened in the last decade-plus of Tennessee football.

Tennessee fans, local and some national media, and even Tennessee politicians revolted against the potential hiring of Greg Schiano as the Vols’ next head football coach. And their efforts were rewarded. Tennessee athletic director John Currie saw the backlash and backed out of the deal with Schiano.

Now Tennessee is back on the search for a head coach. So where are they turning to?

According to a report from John Brice of Gridiron Now, Tennessee has already reached out to two head coaches after the Schiano debacle. Brice reports that according to “a source with firsthand knowledge,” Tennessee has contacted USC offensive coordinator and former Vol quarterback Tee Martin and Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm about their vacancy.

Martin was, of course, the quarterback of the Vols when they won the national title in 1998. He got into college coaching in 2009 when he was hired as the quarterbacks coach of New Mexico. He then coached wide receivers at Kentucky from 2010-11. USC hired him as their wide receivers coach in 2012, and he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016 and still serves that role.

Jeff Brohm is finishing up his first year as Purdue’s head coach. He led the Boilermakers to a 6-6 record and a bowl game, their first bowl appearance since 2012. He also coached at Western Kentucky from 2014-16 and went 30-10 in his three years there.

Tennessee struck out on Greg Schiano because of fan outrage. Now they are scrambling to find another head coach after they thought they had their man. It will be interesting to see who they pursue and who ends up being the hire after this situation.

  1. What part of David Cutcliffe (HC) and John Chavis (DC) does Currie not understand?

  2. I think Currie should be fired because the vols is not in his heart and or his best interest , give us a A D as in Coach Fulmer or someone that actually cares about the program at U T

  3. Gundie or Petrino idiots. Wanna win? Hire winners. What is so hard about this? Cutcliffe is a 50 percent winner. John Chavis, Seriously, OMG.

  4. JT–#1 Currie is not a VOL….he has zero understanding of the culture surrounding UT sports. That itself is a Major problem. Now I hear he is personally going to make the hire. I dont know about you but that doesnt sit well with me. But I think ALL Vol fans would be thrilled to have Dave and John back on UT’s sidelines. GO VOLS
