The 3 Things the Vols Must Have in a New Head Coach

3. Focus on the Quarterback

Quarterback is the most important position in football. Having an electric running back is great, and having a suffocating defense can definitely help you win championships. But if you don’t have a competent quarterback on offense, it doesn’t matter how good everything else is; you likely won’t win championships without a good quarterback.

You don’t need a superstar at quarterback to win at a high level. Alabama has won titles without having truly elite quarterback play. But they were always able to get the most out of their quarterbacks and developed them well enough to help put their teams in good spots. The same can be said for any number of highly successful programs.

Tennessee has several really good, young quarterbacks on their roster right now. And they’ll be welcoming in a couple more in the 2018 recruiting class. Developing these young quarterbacks is paramount to the Vols’ success on offense and as a team the next few years.

Even if the Vols’ next head coach isn’t a quarterback guru himself, he needs to understand the importance of the position and bring in someone who is an established, legitimate quarterbacks coach.

It’s been evident watching the Vols this season that the quarterbacks haven’t been developed correctly. That has to change with Tennessee’s next head coach.

  2. In many ways, this is an endorsement for David Cutcliff IMO. The O-line to me, seems the heart of everything wrong or right now. NO talent matters without blocking for them on a run or pass. And just keeping the offense on the field doing their part, would have changed everything these last few years. Little, big, things.

  3. Wish Jon Gruden and Peyton would get together and get get the Vols back to respectability.
