The 3 Things the Vols Must Have in a New Head Coach

2. Sustained Success

In the same vein as No. 1, Tennessee’s next head coach not only needs to have some “big time” experience, but he needs to have sustained success there as well.

One of the many problems with Butch Jones was that he couldn’t sustain the success he helped build up. Jones did a good job rebuilding Tennessee when he took over, but once he got the talent pool filled with good players again, he couldn’t develop them properly. His ceiling was revealed much quicker than many anticipated, and he was only able to win eight regular season games with six future NFL draft picks as leaders on the team.

Tennessee’s next head coach needs to be a proven winner. The Vols can’t afford to take a gamble on a coach who has built up programs but left after just three years there. Jones never lasted more than three years at a school before he took over at Tennessee. He hadn’t proven he could sustain the success he started with.

The Vols don’t need to take that kind of risk now. It made more sense back in 2012, but now the Vols are in a much better spot from a program standpoint and need someone who is more than just a rebuilder.

  2. In many ways, this is an endorsement for David Cutcliff IMO. The O-line to me, seems the heart of everything wrong or right now. NO talent matters without blocking for them on a run or pass. And just keeping the offense on the field doing their part, would have changed everything these last few years. Little, big, things.

  3. Wish Jon Gruden and Peyton would get together and get get the Vols back to respectability.
