Vols Have a Top-100 Player on Their Roster

According to SB Nation’s college basketball editor Mike Rutherford, the Vols’ basketball team has one of the top 100 players in the country on their roster.

Rutherford recently released his list of college basketball’s top 100 players, and one of Tennessee’s newest players made the list.

James Daniel III, a grad transfer from Howard University, came in at No. 92 on the list. According to Rutherford, Daniel takes that spot because of his scoring prowess that saw him lead the nation in points per game just two seasons ago.

Here’s what Rutherford had to say about Daniel:

“A graduate transfer from Howard, Daniel led the nation in scoring two seasons ago at 27.1 points per game. He’ll look to add some offensive firepower to a Tennessee squad that ranked 145th in the country in scoring last season.”

Daniel played in just a couple games last season due to injury, and that injury is why he was able to transfer out for a fifth season of eligibility. During the 2015-16 season, Daniel led Howard and all of college basketball with 27.1 points per game. He also averaged 2.8 assists per game that season and shot 84.6 percent from the free throw line.

This season, Daniel joins Chris Darrington as guards who have transferred in to play for the Vols. Darrington transferred in from Vincennes University where he averaged 20.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in his second year with Vincennes, and he also shot 43.1 percent from three-point range.

Tennessee begins their 2017-18 season tonight against Presbyterian. Tip-off is at 7 PM Eastern in Thompson Boling Arena.
