Derek Barnett left the University of Tennessee with more sacks than any player in school history. And now he’s picked up his very first sack at the NFL level.
The Philadelphia Eagles were playing the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night football when Barnett was able to break away from a Panthers’ offensive lineman just long enough to grab the leg of Carolina quarterback Cam Newton and bring him down in the fourth quarter.

Barnett entered Thursday’s game with five tackles, two tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery in the Eagles’ first five games. He now has his first career sack to add to that stat line.
The Eagles drafted Barnett with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Barnett became the 45th Vol in school history to be drafted in the first round, and he was the first Vol to be drafted in the first round since Ja’Wuan James was taken 19th overall in the 2014 draft.
