4. Will the Offense Become More Dynamic?
At this point, everyone knows what John Kelly brings to the table. He’s the end-all, be-all of Tennessee’s offense. But aside from him, the Vols have lacked a big play threat with Jauan Jennings sidelined with injury.
Tennessee desperately needs someone to step up and help Kelly. But who?
Sophomore receiver Marquez Callaway is likely the most logical choice as a big play-maker, but his targets and impact have dwindled to nothing over the last couple weeks after he exploded onto the scene in Tennessee’s season opener against Georgia Tech. Callaway had eight catches for 198 yards and three scores after the first three weeks of play, but he hasn’t caught a single pass the last two weeks. Brandon Johnson had a 100-yard performance against UMass, but he also failed to catch a pass against Georgia much like Callaway.
Tyler Byrd was used effectively against UMass, but he didn’t record any stats against the Bulldogs either. Freshman running back Ty Chandler has looked good when he’s been given chances, but he only has 25 total touches through five games this year.
The Vols need someone to emerge as a consistent play-maker besides just John Kelly. Because if nobody does, then Tennessee’s offense is going to flounder.
