Rumors are flying around Tennessee’s football program right now. And at least one of those has proven to be true reportedly.
According to long-time Knoxville reporter Jimmy Hyams, the rumors that two Vol players got into a fight during practice on Thursday are reportedly true. And the fight was so bad that one of the players had to have stitches afterwards.
Allegedly the fight was between redshirt sophomore defensive end Darrell Taylor and freshman offensive lineman Trey Smith. According to Hyams, the two got into a fight, Smith’s helmet came off, and Taylor kicked and hit Smith in the face as Smith was on the ground.

Hyams would go on to report that Taylor later apologized to Smith for the incident. He also reported that Tennessee doesn’t plan to appeal Taylor’s suspension for the first half of the South Carolina game. Taylor was ejected in the second half of the Vols’ 41-0 loss to Georgia last weekend for fighting during the game, and it was announced earlier this week that he will sit out the first half of Tennessee’s game against South Carolina following the bye week.

There has been no update on Trey Smith’s status and whether or not the altercation will cause him to miss any time this season. Smith has made five starts this season on Tennessee’s offensive line.

It just keeps getting worse. It will be interesting to see what happens the rest of the year. But it sure seems as if things are spiraling out of control.
