RTI Film Study: What Went Wrong vs. Florida

Shoop’s Aggressive Play Calling Pays Off

Bob Shoop turned up the heat on Florida’s offense, resulting in a lot of mistakes from redshirt freshman quarterback Feliepe Franks.

Shoop used stunt blitzes, delaying the linebacker’s rush to mess with Franks’ timing.

When the Florida signal caller stepped back into a three or five step drop, he was consistently hurried.

Tennessee’s defensive line got a lot more pressure because it attacked the outside more successfully. The defensive ends get pressure on the perimeter, forcing Franks to step up in the pocket right into the rush of Jumper.

But Darrell Taylor, the star of Tennessee’s defense so far this season, also made a play with a bull rush to the outside.

If Taylor becomes more disruptive as an edge rusher, Tennessee will have much more success messing up the quarterback and getting in the backfield.

Not mentioned in this piece, but still relevant in this game — Tennessee’s defensive tackles. Kendal Vickers, Kahlil McKenzie and Shy Tuttle were all much better against Florida then they were in the first two weeks of the season. UT’s defensive line dominated, and that was what kept the secondary from giving up too many big plays.

One of the few plays over ten yards was the killer because Franks was able to buy time. And Tennessee’s secondary got exposed when it mattered most.
