Coaching
Butch Jones and his staff didn’t do a whole lot to lose the game, but they made some perplexing calls that could’ve prevented Tennessee from winning if the opponent had been slightly more talented. Bob Shoop preferred to keep the defensive linemen a yard or two off the line of scrimmage in the second half, and despite the defense repeatedly getting gashed because of it, he refused to change tactics. The offense looked simplified for the team’s young play-makers, and that helped in the long run. But the coaching was far from exemplary in this one.
