Defensive MVP
Nathanael: Kahlil McKenzie, DT
After coming in as a five-star legacy player and with a great deal of expectations, Kahlil McKenzie hasn’t lived up to the billing just yet. But I think he will this season, and in a big way. The Vols need someone to step up on the defensive line, and I think it will be McKenzie. I also strongly considered him for my breakout player for the Vols, but I ultimately went with another choice.
Will: Justin Martin, DB
I am buying into the Justin Martin hype. If he really is a totally changed player with a new level of preparation and ability, then he could be the lockdown corner the Vols rely on. I think that Martin’s experience makes him the most valuable player in a young, unproven defense. So once again, I’m giving the nod to seniority here.
Mason: Shy Tuttle, DT
We’ve seen flashes of brilliance from Shy, and I think he stays healthy to be a defensive staple this year. He’s got the nose for football that most guys don’t have. Rahsaan Gaulden is also up there.
Yes, Colton Jumper will be the defensive MVP for the Vols this season. The former walk-on is unfairly criticized, but without Jumper, Tennessee doesn’t beat Florida or Georgia last season. Jumper played well during the absence of Darrin Kirkland Jr. last season, and he’ll do the same this season.
