The 10 Most Underrated Vols on the 2017 Roster

2. The Vols’ Quarterbacks

The Vols have two inexperienced but talented quarterbacks on their roster heading into this season. But for all the attention the local media and Vol fans are giving to Tennessee’s quarterback battle, the national media has seemed to barely talk about it and don’t have a high opinion of the Vols’ QBs.

Tennessee’s quarterbacks have consistently been ranked in the bottom of the conference on SEC quarterback rankings. They’ve been ranked 13th by at least two different national services despite both Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano being highly-ranked four-star prospects in their respective recruiting classes.

This isn’t to say either Dormady or Guarantano are going to be Heisman candidates in 2017. That’s a little far-fetched at this point. But the two quarterbacks certainly have better potential than the bottom four quarterbacks in the conference.

Most of the national media who are ranking the Vols’ quarterbacks so low aren’t doing so as a reflection of their perceived talent; they’re doing so because Tennessee’s quarterback situation is just so unknown at this point. But other teams have had quarterback battles with as talented quarterbacks in the past and have been given more benefit of the doubt than the Vols’ quarterbacks right now.
