Vol Stock Report: Week 1 of Fall Camp

Stock Up

Marquez Callaway, WR

Tennessee’s wide receiver rotation is wide open behind Jauan Jennings. But right now, sophomore Marquez Callaway has emerged as a strong candidate to land one of the two open starting spots in the Vols’ three receiver sets. Callaway has shown great hands, athleticism, and awareness in the open periods of practice. He’s been one of the more consistent receivers among the Vols’ younger group of pass catchers.

Latrell Williams, WR

The speedy redshirt freshman missed all of 2016 due to injury. As a precaution, Tennessee’s coaching staff decided to redshirt Latrell Williams during his freshman year. After sitting out a year, rust is always a concern with players. But Williams has looked solid through the first week of fall camp. He’s shown off his speed, but he’s also displayed his ability to make tough catches deep down the field and the ability to catch balls over the middle. Williams is emerging as a possibility at slot receiver for the Vols.

LaTrell Bumphus, TE

The Vols’ tight ends have looked fairly impressive through the first week of fall camp. Senior Ethan Wolf has certainly looked the part, but freshman LaTrell Bumphus has surprised as a bit of a standout as well. His teammates and coaches both have liked what they’ve seen from the big-bodied freshman thus far. Bumphus may not contribute a ton in his first season with the Vols, but the early returns bode well for the rest of his career.

Ty Chandler, RB

Right now, Ty Chandler still appears to be behind John Kelly and Carlin Fils-Aime in the Vols’ running back group. But the freshman has certainly caught the media’s attention with his athletic frame and burst. We haven’t seen a ton of actual running back play in practice, but what we’ve seen from Chandler overall has been fairly impressive.
