The Vols have a number of players on award watch lists this offseason. And yet another Vol was added to another list on Tuesday.
Senior safety Todd Kelly Jr. has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list. The Wuerffel Trophy, according to its website, is “awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.”
Kelly Jr. often gives back to the the Knoxville community and even wore the No. 24 last season in honor of Zaevion Dobson, the Fulton High School football player who sacrificed himself to save the lives of two girls in a drive-by shooting. Dobson wore the No. 24 when he played for Fulton. Not only that, but Kelly helped the Fulton community off the field as well.
In his three years with Tennessee, Kelly has totaled 146 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, eight interceptions, and six passes defended. Kelly only needs four more interceptions to finish inside the top-10 for most career interceptions in school history.
Last year’s winner of the Wuerffel Trophy was Texas A&M’s Trevor Knight. A defensive back has never won the award in its 11 years of existence.
