Biggest Losers
1. Aaron Medley
After a strong start to his Vol career as a freshman, Aaron Medley, now a senior, has seen his career trajectory take a downward turn over the last few seasons. Medley has been far from bad, but after connecting on 76.9 percent of his 26 field goals as a freshman, Medley has hit just 68.1 percent of his 47 field goal attempts since.
Some of Medley’s misses in his career have been from 45 or more yards. But a troubling amount have been from within the 40-yard mark. And that happened again on Saturday as Medley failed to hit a 35-yard chip shot field goal in the second quarter.
It was far from a disastrous day for Medley. But after some less than inspiring performances over the last two years, Medley’s gaffe in the Orange and White Game did little to instill hope in Vol fans.
2. Jarrett Guarantano
Although he didn’t have a bad performance himself, Jarrett Guarantano is still considered a “loser” since his main competitor, Quinten Dormady, separated himself a bit in the quarterback competition on Saturday.
The redshirt freshman completed four of his five pass attempts for 41 yards and finished a close second to Dormady in the quarterback skills competition. But Dormady by far had the better showing on Saturday, and that by extension means Guarantano fell back in the race for Tennessee’s starting quarterback.
3. Sheriron Jones
Although he wasn’t getting much play in the discussion for Tennessee’s quarterback battle, redshirt sophomore Sheriron Jones was still squarely the No. 3 quarterback on Tennessee’s depth chart. And Jones will still have that distinction heading into the fall, but his performance in the Orange and White Game was underwhelming at best.
Jones completed just one of his four passes for just two yards. He also had one of the worst performances in the quarterback skills competition on the day as well. True freshman Will McBride had a better performance during the skills competition than Jones.
He wasn’t expected to be a true threat in the quarterback battle, but Sheriron Jones solidly took a backseat to Dormady and Guarantano after Saturday.
