Coaching Search Update: Still No Hire

Zach Azzanni

Quick bio: Azzanni is a name Tennessee fans know well because he’s been with Jones in Knoxville since 2013. He was an internal candidate to be offensive coordinator in 2015, but instead took the title promotion to passing game coordinator when DeBord came in as the full-time OC. He had previous stops at Wisconsin, Central Michigan and Bowling Green as a receivers coach, and was the passing game coordinator for Florida in 2010 and was the OC at Western Kentucky in 2011.

Pros: Azzanni has a high trust level with Butch Jones after being one of his most loyal assistants in recent years. He knows the ins and outs of what Jones wants to do on that side of the ball like few others. The passing game took a nice step forward in 2016 as well in his second year as the passing-game coordinator.

Cons/Questions: Receiver development has been a major question under Azzanni at Tennessee up until 2016, when junior Josh Malone, who is going to the NFL Draft, and sophomore Jauan Jennings stepped up. Azzanni has never called plays at the Power 5 level either, so it would be a big leap for him.
