Coaching Search Update: Still No Hire

Sonny Cumbie

Quick bio: Cumbie worked his way up from walk-on to starting quarterback at Texas Tech and then got a few professional opportunities. He returned to TTU and, again, worked his way up from GA to co-offensive coordinator before heading over to TCU in the same capacity.

Pros: Over a three-year period, it’s tough to find many offenses around the country that have been as productive as what Cumbie and co-OC Doug Meacham have produced at TCU. Cumbie has a background as a quarterback and his time spent at Texas Tech and TCU make him more than qualified to lead an offense like Tennessee’s.

Cons/Questions: Cumbie reportedly turned down a $1 million+ offer from Texas following last season to be Charlie Strong’s OC. Would he consider Tennessee this go around, and would the Vols pay that much? TCU’s offense was decent in 2016, but did take a step back from some of the massive numbers from the prior two years.
