Coaching Search Update: Still No Hire

Wes Welker

Quick bio: Welker is one of the best-known NFL receivers in the past decade or so with successful stints with the Dolphins, Patriots and Broncos. He piled up just short of 10,000 career receiving yards on 903 career catches in a decorated 12-year NFL career. A report from 247Sports has indicated that Welker has been in town to meet with Jones.

Pros: Welker is a household name for football fans and would bring credibility as somebody who knows the ins and outs of the position and as a recruiter. It’s tough to imagine anybody better to coach somebody like Tyler Byrd.

Cons/Questions: The main question would be about fit. He wouldn’t be qualified to run the entire offense with essentially no major coaching experience. So would that mean Zach Azzanni would be elevated to OC and Welker would coach the receivers? Who would coach the quarterbacks then? Would Welker possibly be a GA or quality control coach? It’s tough to say what that staff would look like exactly, but this is an intriguing possibility.
