Tennessee Coaching Search Update: One Week In

Mike Canales

Quick bio: Canales is a jack-of-all-trades type of coach who has made stops all over the nation. He’s had lengthy stops at South Florida, North Texas and Arizona in different capacities, but he’s spent most of his career as a quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator. He’s current the assistant head coach/RBs/TEs coach at his alma mater, Utah State.

Pros: Jones is good friends with Canales – so much to the point that he openly stumped for him to be the head coach at North Texas when he was an interim and played the Vols in 2015. He has plenty of experience with quarterbacks, has called plays for several years at the Power 5 level and has a good grasp for several different positions on offense.

Cons: He certainly wouldn’t be much of a splash hire, and those who were critical of Jones for hiring Mike DeBord would probably have similar critiques if he brought in Canales.
