Game 8 – South Carolina
After two consecutive losses to SEC West foes, Vol fans were ready to return to the SEC East where the competition was (presumably) going to be much easier. The Vols even had a bye week to recover from the beat down at the hands of Alabama and to prepare for the Gamecocks.
None of that mattered, however, because the Vols went out and played their worst game of the season on the road at South Carolina and managed to ultimately cough up the SEC East in the process.
All the Jalen Hurd drama came to a boiling point in this game, and Tennessee’s offense suffered because of the lack of chemistry. This was also the beginning of the downfall of the Vols’ defense. The Vols turned the ball over three times while never forcing a turnover, and the Gamecocks pulled off the upset 24-21. And then Jalen Hurd announced the next day he was leaving the program.
