The Battle at Bristol had been in the making for three years before the Vols and Hokies made history this September by playing a football game on a racetrack in Bristol Motor Speedway. But the Vols didn’t see the starting flag and fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter to Virginia Tech.

Then the wheels fell off for the Hokies, and the Vols made them pay.

Virginia Tech fumbled the ball five times in the game, and Tennessee recovered all five of the dropped balls. The Hokies may have outgained the Vols 400 yards to 330, but Tennessee outscord them 45-10 after spotting the Hokies that 14-0 lead. Tennessee wasn’t extremely efficient on offense, but they had the benefit of good field position almost all game thanks to Virginia Tech’s miscues.
