Tennessee’s opening game of the season almost ended in disaster. The Vols trailed the entire game until ting up the game at 13 in the fourth quarter on a bomb from Josh Dobbs to Josh Malone. But Appalachian State was in position to take the lead with about five and a half minutes to go in the game. The Mountaineers’ kicker missed a chip shot field goal, however, and the Vols would end up going to overtime to star the season. It then took Jalen Hurd recovering a Josh Dobbs fumble in the end zone for the Vols to get the decisive score.

This game was ugly from start to finish, and the Vols looked undisciplined from the start. Luck played a big factor in the Vols’ win over Appy State, but they took the breaks as they came and found a way to survive.
