If the Vols beat Vanderbilt to close out the season, they were likely going to get the berth to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. All they had to do was beat a 5-6 Vandy team that had struggled to move the ball all season long.

That didn’t happen, however. And this last game of the season has left a bitter taste in the mouths of Vol fans.

The Commodores trailed 31-24 at halftime to the Vols before holding Tennessee to just three points in the second half while scoring 21 of their own to win 45-34. The Vols were able to move the ball on Vanderbilt in both halves, but they couldn’t punch it into the end zone in the second and had a couple costly turnovers as well. Vanderbilt outplayed Tennessee and outcoached them as well.

Vanderbilt quarterback Kyle Shurmur had a career day against the Vols, throwing for 416 yards and two scores. Tennessee’s own quarterback, Josh Dobbs, put in a heroic effort only to see his team lose. Dobbs completed 31 of his 34 passes for 340 yards while adding 53 yards on the ground as well.
