Arguably the top overall player on Tennessee’s board in the 2017 class is taking an important visit to Knoxville this weekend.

Jackson, Tenn., offensive tackle Trey Smith, the No. 4 overall player in the nation according to 247Sports, is in town as he gets set to make his announcement on Tuesday.

Tennessee, Ohio State and Alabama appear to have emerged as the top three teams in contention, with some reports saying it’s realistically down to Ohio State and UT.

Smith, who has a sister that works for UT, has been a huge priority for Butch Jones and the Vols in this class. Tennessee held a lineman satellite camp at his high school in Jackson over the summer. While the Vols couldn’t officially brand it for Smith, it was clear that the intention was to let Smith know what a priority he is for this class.

And it’s a huge upcoming announcement for Jones, who hasn’t locked down the state in the manner that many thought he would in the 2017 class. While the Vols do have several talented in-state commitments such as Ty Chandler and Maleik Gray, Tennessee only has two of the top-10 players (247Sports) in the state committed at this point.

Smith plans to be an early enrollee. The Vols currently have two offensive linemen in the 2017 class – Riley Locklear and K’Rojhn Calbert.
