Vols Make Final Payout to Dooley

Derek Dooley-1

Here’s some good news for Tennessee fans who haven’t had a lot to celebrate in the past couple of months:

That’s right, Tennessee will write its final check to former coach Derek Dooley in the month of December, according to the buyout agreement that was reached when the Vols fired Dooley in November of 2012. According to figures from the Knoxville News Sentinel, Dooley was owed approximately $5 million in total buyout money that was scheduled to be paid in monthly installments of approximately $102,000 through December of 2016.

It’s possible that UT and Dooley reached any kind of lump-sum settlement, but if the contract paid out according to the original buyout, then UT has been paying Dooley in those monthly installments as scheduled.

That likely means at some point this month, UT will write that final check to Dooley, and his disastrous era can come to even more of an official close even though it’s been four years since he’s been in Knoxville.
