The newest College Football Playoff rankings announced Tuesday evening moved Tennessee up from No. 19 to No. 17.

The bad news for the Vols is that two SEC teams (not expected to make the playoffs) – remain in front of them with Florida checking in at No. 15 and Auburn at No. 13.

The good news is that both those teams still have a game against Alabama left on the slate, while Florida also must play No. 14 Florida State this weekend, potentially opening up the path for UT to the Sugar Bowl. LSU and Texas A&M, which were in the poll last week, both dropped out this week.

The Sugar Bowl will take the top-ranked SEC team in the final ranking that is not involved in the playoffs.

That very well could be Tennessee at this point if the Vols can take care of business against Vanderbilt on Saturday and get a little help from Florida State and Alabama.
