Overall
In our game preview, we wrote that the worst-case scenario was a blowout loss with more injuries. That’s exactly what unfolded. Some of what happened was understandable due to an unprecedented number of injuries. But it’s also difficult to leave a game against your biggest rival with a 39-point defeat – the largest in this series since 1906 – and say that you’re ok with it. Alabama physically dominated Tennessee for 60 minutes, and showed why it is the top-ranked team in the nation and that there still is a gap between the Tide and Vols. Tennessee can’t get too down about this one, however. The Vols get a very well-timed bye week next. They should be much healthier in a couple weeks, and they have a very real shot to finish the season 10-2 and to win the East. There might be a rematch waiting in Atlanta, but there’s a lot of work to do before then.
