5. RB John Kelly
Butch Jones listed Jalen Hurd as “day to day” on Wednesday after saying he would be “full go” on Monday. That doesn’t sound promising. There’s been plenty of speculation about what exactly is ailing UT’s star running back, but regardless, the Vols have to at least be prepared for the possibility that he might not play in College Station. That could mean the first significant action for sophomore John Kelly, who has been waiting for his opportunity.
Kelly has been used in garbage time, and has received spot duty in big moments, but has never touched the football more than a few times in a big game. He won’t need to be a star for the Vols, but if he’s called upon, UT needs him to take care of the football, run hard and be solid in pass protection.
