Butch Jones didn’t know the exact diagnosis for cornerback Cam Sutton following UT’s 28-19 win over Ohio, but he did say the senior cornerback who went down early against the Bobcats will miss an “extended period of time.”

That could be a major blow for UT with a gauntlet of games coming up including Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M and Alabama. Jones was complimentary of freshman cornerback Baylen Buchanan, who played well in relief of Sutton.

Jones said linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin hurt his shoulder, but he anticipates him returning next week against Florida.

Defensively, the Vols played much of the game without Reeves-Maybin, Sutton, cornerback Justin Martin, linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. and cornerback Malik Foreman, who was suspended for the game.

“You look out there on defense,” Jones said. “That was the definition of next man up. Colton Jumper, Cortez McDowell, Baylen Buchanan – all those individuals out there on defense.”

Offensively, wide receiver Josh Smith (ankle) sat the game out as well after Butch Jones listed him as questionable coming into the game.
