In case you haven’t heard, the Vols struggled to win their first game of the 2016 season. It took overtime for Tennessee to defeat Appalachian State 20-13, and the Vols looked slow, sloppy, and inefficient on offense almost all night. The defense strengthened after the half, but the first half saw some unusual gaffes on that side of the ball too.

All in all, it was a very uncharacteristic performance by a Butch Jones-led Vols team. But one national analyst thinks the Vols will look much better when they take on Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has said before that he has high hopes for the Vols this season, choosing them to win the SEC East and take on Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. And he’s keeping the faith after a disappointing performance by the Vols in their opening game.

Butch Jones said in his weekly press conference on Monday that the Vols have a lot to work on after one game. Herbstreit appears confident the Vols will do that and be much more prepared to take on the Hokies than they were the Mountaineers.
