Some notes and observations from practice as the Vols took the field Wednesday morning in shoulder pads, helmets and shorts for their first of two sessions of the day.

Non-contact: Linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, defensive lineman Austin Smith, receiver Jauan Jennings, defensive back Micah Abernathy and cornerback D.J. Henderson all worked in green, non-contact uniforms.

Hands work: I’ve been high on Preston Williams since spring practice, and he continues to do good things this fall. We regularly get a close look at him working on JUGS machine (the machine that launches passes at receivers so they can work on their hands) and he’s one of the best on the team in that drill.

On Wednesday, he put on another show, catching several passes that were launched at a high velocity, sometimes using just one hand. That obviously doesn’t translate directly to success on the field as a receiver, but he continues to show that he is one of the most skilled receivers on the team and is having a great camp overall so far.

Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Darrin Kirkland Jr. also came over and worked with the machine. Both showed pretty good hands for their position.

Daniel keeps booming them: Punter Trevor Daniel, back for his redshirt junior year after breaking out last year with a 45.7 yard per punt average, continues to look great in camp as well. He skied several on Wednesday morning, as he has all of camp. The media will hear from him after practice.

Coming up: Tennessee is back on the practice field this evening at 6:50 pm ET in a session that will be closed to the media. UT practices again at 4:20 pm ET on Thursday, has Friday off for Media Day and then will have a practice on both Saturday and Sunday, both of which are closed to the media.
