4. Defensive Transformation
When Bob Shoop was hired as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator this offseason, expectations suddenly rose even more for a unit that already had incredible potential. Shoop is widely regarded as one of the best defensive coordinators in the country, but he’s never had the kind of talent at his disposal that he does this season with the Vols.
And just how much will Tennessee’s defense improve this season? We’ll get our first look in fall camp.
The coaching staff won’t reveal much in the way of new packages or formations on either side of the ball before the season starts, but there should still be a noticeable difference between a John Jancek-led defense and one Bob Shoop controls pretty early on in fall camp. Shoop historically likes to blitz more than Jancek, and he uses slightly different personnel as well.
Tennessee’s defense has high hopes in 2016. And fall camp will only serve to heighten those lofty expectations.
