The graduation of Nathan Renfro and the offseason transfer of Tommy Townsend left the Vols with just one scholarship punter – Trevor Daniel – on the roster.

UT also has incoming freshman walk-on Grayson Linde on the roster, and over the weekend added local walk-on punter Brandon Nickle from Oak Ridge, who had previously committed to Virginia Tech as a walk-on.

Nickle doesn’t go into great detail in his statement, but does indicate that he was uncertain that he would be able to play in college.

““First off, I would like to thank God for the kicking abilities that he has given me,” he says in his Twitter statement. “None of this would have been possible without Him. I would also like to thank my family, coaches and friends. Over the past few weeks it looked as if I might not be able to continue my football career in college. However, I was lucky enough to be recruited once again by my dream school. I feel extremely blessed to announce that I will be continuing my education and football career at the University of Tennessee!”

UT, which needs some depth behind Daniel, appears to be a natural fit for Nickle. The Vols have officially begun training camp on Sunday and will hold their first formal practice on Monday evening at 6:10 pm ET.
