Comparing 2016 Vols to UT Greats

Cam Sutton/Dale Carter

Cam Sutton-1

When thinking about great DB/punt returners in school history, Dale Carter certainly is right at the top of the list. Carter was only in Knoxville for two years, so here’s a look at average production per year from Carter and Sutton thus far both as defensive backs and punt returners:

Sutton: 34.6 tackles/year, 8.6 PBU/year, 2 INT/year; 16.0 yard punt return average, 3 total PR TDs
Carter: 54 tackles/year, 5 PBU/year, 4.5 INTs/year, 9.8 yard punt return average, 0 total PR TDs

While Carter was more productive defensively (in fairness, Sutton hasn’t had much come his way the past couple years), Sutton very well could go down as the greatest punt returner in school history if he keeps his pace another season.

Another comparison to keep an eye on: Nigel Warrior, Carter’s son, begins his UT career this season at safety.
