Comparing 2016 Vols to UT Greats

Derek Barnett/Reggie White

Derek Barnett-1

This one might blow you away a bit. Barnett, again benefitting from extensive early playing time, is far ahead of the Minister of Defense in terms of productivity on the field at this point in his career. Here’s a look at their stats through two years on campus:

White: 146 tackles, 9 TFLs, 10 sacks
Barnett: 141 tackles, 33 TFLs, 20 sacks

White added 147 tackles and 22 sacks over the course of his junior and senior seasons to go down as arguably the greatest defender in UT history. Barnett very well may not stick around all four years to get a perfect comparison, but if he can collect a dozen sacks as a junior, he can match White’s career sack total, which currently stands as UT’s school record (32).
